Retriever II
Description
Retriever II is a commercial product developed and published by Exodus Software
as a flat-file database solution for small to medium size files. It supports
files up to 16,000 records and 255 columns, with text fields as large as 32,000
characters. It uses a proprietary record caching system, allowing Retriever II
to work in a small memory partition, even with files of several thousand records,
and many fields. Retriever II's powerful import engine allows users to append
data to an existing file, combining up to 4 fields into a single field. Fields
can be numeric and calculated as well as text, allowing for many uses beyond some
of the more basic databases. Phone dialing with customizable strings and preferences
are included, allowing the user to dial either using a modem or through the
Macintosh's speaker.
Advanced Features
- Fast searches of your data - search for text or portions of text in all
of the data, or only specific fields or records.
- Easy sorting of text or numeric columns.
- Handling of large data files - Retriever II files can grow in size up
to 256 fields per record, up to 16,000 records.
- Flexible formatting - columns can be resized by dragging, and can also
be repositioned by dragging them to new locations, and the font and size of
the display text can be changed at any time.
- Hiding columns - columns can be hidden, providing the ability to print,
copy or export a subset of your database.
- Marking records - records can be marked, allowing you to pring, copy or
export specific records.
Import and Export Features
Imported data can be used to create a new file, or it can be appended to a
current file. Powerful import features include:
- Data conversions - if placed into a numeric field, the incoming text is
automatically converted to numeric data
- Joining fields - you can specify that up to 4 fields of the incoming
data be joined into a single field of the existing file. Text can be inserted
between joined fields.
